When & Where? Thursday, April 26, 2018, Frank Erwin Center Fashion Alley (Concourse) 5:30 World of Textiles and Apparel Exhibition Room and the SoHE Directors Design Challenge (Lone Star Room) 7:00 Runway Show (Arena)
This spring, 29 senior apparel design students at the University of Texas at Austin will take cutting edge designs that blend fashion and science to the runway in a blockbuster annual show titled, Dimension. The annual show, organized by The University Fashion Group, will feature 140 original designs featuring garments inspired by abstract expressionism, exaggerated organic structures and circular fashion. The show will begin at 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the Frank Erwin Center. Admission is free and open to the public. Senior designers are introduced to a sustainability challenge that creates one of a kind designs composed from donated articles of fast fashion clothing. TXA lecturer, Gail Chovan, describes this assignment as vital to the fashion industry. “There is a growing need to convert to a lasting or reusable status where we are not just regurgitating [styles].”
Tasked to create something entirely new out of pre-existing garments, ‘Dimension’ features cutting edge designs that include digital prints, performance fabrics and sustainability. In honor of the University Co-op, who is returning as a founding and title sponsor, Dimension will feature game day inspired garments, “The Forever Longhorn.” Designers will gather inspiration from the UT Longhorn sports program and create a design that is both functional and comfortable while capturing the intrinsic nature of UT’s game day spirit. The event will be prefaced by a Textiles and Apparel student exhibition “World of Textiles and Apparel” beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Lonestar room. This exhibition will feature student designs and research projects, as well as the entries for the SoHE Director’s Design Challenge.
Students graduating with a Textiles and Apparel degree, past and present, have gone on to work for Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang, Zac Posen, Betsey Johnson, Michael Kors, Brooks Brothers, Nordstrom, Guess, Fossil, and Macy’s, to name a few.
A panel of industry professionals comprised from apparel designers, retailers, educators, potential consumers, and friends of the fashion show will award the Most Innovative Collection, Most Marketable Collection, Best Technical Collection, Best Evening Gown, Best Bridal Gown, and Best Overall Collection of 2018.
