Chelsey Nordyke is helping you keep your cool in the Texas heat.
A description of her line, Spire the Label, includes adjectives like “luxe”, “versatile” and “non-fussy”, all necessary components of a wardrobe suitable for Austin’s dynamic lifestyles. But, despite the reference in her brand’s name, Nordyke says she doesn’t like labels.
“My aesthetic is very minimalistic and I like the clothes to be able to speak for themselves,” she said. “Don’t get me wrong though – I do have an eye for details and try to incorporate interesting little details into each piece.”
The Austin native launched Spire the Label in January of 2014, but she exhibited creativity long before. Her passion for art burgeoned through her teenage years and she was eventually accepted to Savannah College of Art and Design. However, she declined admission to focus on designing. She debuted her premiere collection this year at Austin Fashion Week.
The gamble paid off as she was awarded the Austin Fashion Fund, a package presented?to an Austin designer to foster the?growth of their emerging brand. Chelsey?said that the fund, and the exposure provided by showing at Austin Fashion Week, has opened many doors.
Looking to the future, her hometown will continue to play a big role in the expansion of her business. Her favorite part of Austin, she said, is the combination of cultural diversity and local unity. ?Nordyke said she?has found that Austin “inspires and celebrates the uniqueness of the artistic culture that inhabits it.? She announced this week that Spire the Label will now be sold at SUNROOM on South Lamar.?
“I have found that people here are so open to helping me with anything I need in order to get this brand off the ground,” she said.?
